The last days of the steam locomotive

Steaming through the Börde!
The railway and the Magdeburg Börde have a long history. As early as the middle of the 19th century, important connections ran first via Oschersleben and later via Eilsleben, helping to link regions such as Berlin and the Ruhr area.
Local sugar production flourished with the new and faster transport routes. Many privately funded small railways were built to connect the factories to the railway network. In addition, the number of stops and railway stations grew to over 60.
Steam locomotives were used to operate the railway until the 1980s, when they were completely replaced by diesel locomotives. Today, the railway has lost its pioneering role in passenger and goods transport to cars and lorries and many lines have been closed down.
